Spring 2024 Countdown

The countdown is ON.

Only 39 more days until the first *official* day of spring. As the last vestiges of winter begin to fade away, Portland awakens with a burst of energy and color, welcoming the arrival of spring. Known for its lush greenery, eclectic neighborhoods, vibrant cultural scene, Portland transforms into a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike this time of year.

One of the most enchanting aspects of spring in Portland is the emergence of blossoms throughout the city’s numerous parks and gardens. From the iconic cherry blossoms adorning the waterfront at Tom McCall Waterfront Park to the dazzling display of rhododendrons at the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden (which was recently nominated as one of the best botanical gardens in the US), each corner of Portland bursts forward with a kaleidoscope of colors signaling the arrival of a new season.

Springtime in Portland also marks the beginning of one of my very favorite PDX activities… farmers market season! Local farmers, artisans and food purveyors come together to showcase the regions’s abundance of fresh produce and culinary delights. From the renowned Portland Farmers Market at PSU to the various neighborhood markets throughout the city, visitors and residents can savor the flavors of spring while supporting local growers and producers. These markets, as well as the many events, festivals, parades, concerts, and celebrations, also serve as a reminder of our beautiful city’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Clean-up events and tree plantings, along with initiatives to promote biking, public transit use, and renewable energy, continue to lead Portland to be an example of fostering a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Portland really comes alive in the springtime. There is something magical about experiencing changing seasons, especially in the Pacific Northwest. I personally am really looking forward to the opening day of the Sellwood-Moreland Farmers Market, the always-fun Portland Flea, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, longer days, and people-watching as we all slowly spend more and more time outside.
